Introduction
The California State Board of Education has adopted core academic content standards for kindergarten through grade 12 in English-Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. The core content standards are the basis for the subject matter frameworks, the adoption of K-8 instructional materials, and the standards-aligned tests in California's student performance assessment system.
The California Achievement Test, Version 5 (CAT/5) is a series of standardized tests intended to measure the achievement of basic academic skills by students across the nation.
The CAT/5 is published by CTB Macmillan/McGraw-Hill.

State law (Senate Bill 2) authorized the development of the High School Exit Examination (HSEE) that students in California public schools will have to pass to receive a high school diploma, beginning with the graduating class of 2004.
The purpose of the HSEE is to improve student achievement in high school. It also is to help ensure that students who graduate from high school can demonstrate competency in the content standards for reading, writing, and mathematics, adopted by the State Board of Education.
Established by law in 1997, the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program requires that all public school districts in California use a single standardized test.
