Dear Parents and Community Members,

I am sending regular updates so that everyone feels informed and can be confident in our plan to be ready to start school on time for students, on August 13. First of all, you should know that our own maintenance and custodial staff have been simply unbelievable in their immediate and full response to the series of earthquakes.  Many loyal and dedicated SSUSD employees have been working extremely long hours every single day, since July 4.

Additionally, last week we were the fortunate recipients for service and support from many agencies:  California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), California Department of State Architect (DSA), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Each of these agencies conducted thorough inspections of all our district properties and they each prepare and submit their own unique reports up the chain.  This process will assure proper funding for our school district to receive monetary support for all needed repairs.

Some of you may be interested in the specific identification of what we know needs to be fixed before we start school in August.  Following is a list that briefly lists the “yellow tags” and the one “red tag” that DSA identified in their structural assessment of our buildings and classrooms:

District staff has been working as quickly as humanly and organizationally possible to contract with architecture and construction professionals so that cost estimates and scope of work can lead to actual repair work this week.  Yes, work is starting TODAY!

We will direct and prioritize all repair work to accomplish the yellow tag (and one red tag) items first so that school will open on time.  No doubt, there will be continued repair and cleanup work for months after school starts, but what’s most important is that we clear the tagged work.

Lastly, for the purposes of this communication, many have asked about volunteers interested in the clean-up phase of work.  I think this is a great resource we shouldn’t overlook.  As the days march on, as we can properly identify timing and logistics for the power of volunteerism.

I hope you are finding ways to stay cool as the heat of summer has found us.
