Independent Study

Independent Study

What is the Sierra Sands Independent Study Distance Learning model?

Students in the Independent Study program are at an advantage during this shift to distance learning because the way they access instruction does not change.  Only the physical location from which they access their courses will be different. Students will continue to receive instruction through our Independent Study program, Acellus

What is the expectation for student learning?

Just as we welcome students onto our campuses and into our classrooms, we welcome them into the “virtual classrooms” through Acellus. Just as students are expected to enter through the physical door of a classroom, students and families should “enter” their classrooms through the Acellus Application and sign in.  All Independent Study students should continue to engage in learning during school closures.

Technology/Internet Support

How do I access AcellusAcellus can be accessed through any device that has internet connectivity. Parents can check on progress through their cell phone, but students may find it difficult to complete assignments on a phone.

What if I need a learning device/Chromebook?

Acellus Account Information

What is Acellus?

Acellus is a distance learning platform that uses video-based lessons with cutting-edge technology to individualize learning, provide credit recovery, reduce dropout rates and transition more students into careers and college.

How does my student login to Acellus?

  • Proceed to https://www.acellus.com/ and click on the Student Sign-In student button , enter the student's sign-in information.

  • If the student has lost the login information, please email the teacher of the course, or jmcclelland@ssusd.

How do I acquire a parent account to check on the student’s progress?

On the student’s Acellus home page, click on the “Parent Registration” button.  Up to four email addresses can be entered to receive an invitation to register as a parent.

What if I have a question about an assignment?

Contact the assigned teacher or Mr. Campbell through email. See Independent Study Teacher list below.

My student is ready for an exam.  How do we get an exam unlocked?

During this time of distance learning, all exams have been unlocked for students.  We would request that parents monitor the student for honesty when taking an exam. Students are allowed to use the notes they have taken in the course on the exams.  If for some reason, a test is locked, email Mr. Campbell or Mrs. McClelland

How will credit be awarded?

For Independent Study, we must keep hard copies of work completed in the course to show that the student took the course and did the work.  For Acellus courses, the evidence that is required are the notes for each course.  At some point in the future, we will ask students to turn in the notes for each course so please keep them in a safe place.  Graduating seniors may scan or email their notes to Mr. Campbell.
